The wild
weather is taking it’s toll on the cruise.
This morning we diverted in to the Tjeldsundet Fjord so in effect we
missed the ports of Sortland and Stokmarknes and called into Harstad, this
ended up a real bonus because we had a snow storm while we were docked at
Harstad. We were able to leave the ship
for 2 hours. We wandered around the town
centre in the snow before we found a café and had the best coffee and hot
chocolate in the north. Back on board, heading south.
At 2 o’clock
the captain announced that she would be holding a meeting regarding the weather
conditions and how those conditions would impact the remaining days of the
cruise. In a nutshell we will head to
Bodo from Stamsund tonight where there will be waves of up to 6 metres for
about 4 hours. We may have to lay up at
Bodo if there is room at the dock, many ships are seeking safe harbours along
the west coast because of the severe wind and waves.
From Bodo
to Tondheim there is about 30 hours of open waters where, at the moment, winds
are gale force and the waves are up to 10 metres. If the weather changes they will head to
Trondheim where they may have to charter flights to Bergen for people with
connections from Bergen. If they can’t
make it to Trondheim there will be flights from Bodo. Another meeting tomorrow at 10.30am where
more information may be available.
So at this
stage we will get to Bodo at 2.30am tonight (15th); 16th and
17th two days at sea to Trondheim, arriving Trondheim at 11.00 am on
Sunday the 17th. Further
information to follow, so as you can see, it’s very messy.
All very
exciting for us all, nothing we can do except sit tight and watch the weather; and
no good story started with a fine weather report!!??

Gees it’s all happening now Folks. Lovely to see it snowed for you. Makes everything look great. Great pics. Give an appreciation of life in Norway.
ReplyDeleteNot so sure about the weather outside though. Certainly will be a rough ride home with those seas. Keep safe. Let the adventure continue.

According to all the staff this Captain is the best and safest around, Hurtigruten will be chartering an aircraft either from Bodo or Trontheim to get us to Bergen. We are not too concerned, it's been a great cruise and we've seen all we need to see so the little twist at the end is another story we can tell!!!
DeleteSounds good to me. How’s our intrepid flyer taking all this aerial business. !!!
